"Om Shanti Om" is one of the most expensive Indian films ever made. With a budget of $25 million, it was filmed in sets that had more than 6,000 craftsmen and 6,000 artists. The movie took more than 18 months to complete and had more than 1.4 million extras. If you like DDLJ (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai), then you will not want to miss "Om Shanti Om". It has the same feel with lavish sets of Mughal era India and extravagant songs for all occasions - from Jagjit Singh-like qawwalis on the radio to disco songs in discos for kids' birthdays. In fact the tune of the song "Main Aayi Hoon" from DDLJ was used in a similar way in "Om Shanti Om". The movie stars six main characters played by Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Rani Mukerji, Rishi Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade and Arjun Rampal. Shah Rukh Khan plays Om Kapoor (not to be confused with SRK’s other character in "Salaam Namaste"), the male lead. Om is not very bright but he makes up for it with his brash confidence (or is it plain stupidity?). Deepika Padukone plays the reincarnation of Om Kapoor’s love Shanti (the movie’s title "Om Shanti Om" is a reference to this). She is the female lead. Rani Mukerjee plays herself (or more accurately, herself as she is now). Rani has grown up to be an actress who loses her memory every now and then. Shreyas Talpade plays the role of Toshi Sabri, an actor who played a parody of Pakistan’s military dictator Pervez Musharraf in a Bollywood movie. Arjun Rampal, the grandson of Jennifer Kendal and Prithviraj Kapoor, plays the role of Deepika’s lover Adi Shankaracharya. Rishi Kapoor plays Om's father.
As with many large-scale Bollywood productions, "Om Shanti Om" has featured several songs by popular Indian singers. There are 11 original songs in this film written by Sayeed Quadri, with music composed by the musical duo Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (consisting of Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa). All lyrics were penned by Prasoon Joshi. There are also three remix versions of songs featured in the film. The song "Na Jaane Kahan Se Aaye" has two versions. The first version, sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, was released as part of the soundtrack album. This version is played during the opening credits of the movie. A second version, sung by Alisha Chinai, was released as part of the "Alisha Chinai's Remix 2007" album. The second version plays during a sequence in which Shahrukh Khan plays electric guitar to impress Deepika Padukone. The other song with two versions is "Har Kadam Par Chalo", sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Alisha Chinai respectively.
